Introduction
Faculty and students investigate a broad spectrum of topics covering control, automation, and intelligent systems. Theoretical issues and topics under investigation include

  • optimal control, predictive control, adaptive control
  • non-linear system, neural network, fuzzy system, and robustness.
Insights from these studies are harnessed in the design of modern technological systems, with applications to various fields including

  • automatic building management
  • intelligent robots, artificial intelligence,
  • high speed network and so on.
In the field of Control, Robotics & Systems, there are 5 full-time professors, 21 Ph.D. students and 14 MS students.

  • Intelligent System Research Laboratory
  • Power Engineering Laboratory image The Intelligent System Research Laboratory, founded by Professor Gwi-Tae Park, is carrying out the research about the intelligence computation, intelligent signal processing, and ubiquitous computing techniques. We have studied and developed various systems and functional entities, such as biped walking robot control system, advanced ubiquitous sensor network, network based robot system, advanced 3D face or object recognition, advanced airbag system, and intelligent building system.

    Based on previous various researches, we have abilities to develop total systems under ubiquitous computing and networking environment. Our current activities focus on three sub-areas, which are wireless sensor networks system or RFID systems, network based robot control system, and vision based intelligent environment recognition system.

  • Adaptive Systems Laboratory
  • Power Engineering Laboratory image Our dream is to realize Adaptive Systems that are able to deal with uncertain situations in an intelligent manner. Our research efforts have focused on control and systems engineering with applications to electrical drives, power systems, communication networks, autopilot, chemical processes, and so on.

    One interesting way of achieving adaptive control is to construct a hybrid system consisting of a (possibly infinite) number of fixed controllers. Adaptation is performed via switching amongst those controllers. We are also involved in research on constrained control; this is important, as almost all real processes are subject to physical constraints. We consider these constraints, which are normally ignored at the time of control design.

    In the Adaptive Systems Laboratory, communications among people are also emphasized. Hence we talk a lot about logical thinking, clear technical writing, and presentation skills.

  • Control and Mechatronics Laboratory
  • Power Engineering Laboratory image The Control and Mechatronics Laboratory, founded by Professor Myo-Taeg Lim, is focusing on the research about the optimal control system and robot control algorithm. We have studied the parallel algorithm for implementation of large scale control systems and the robust control to guarantee stability despite system modeling error, uncertainty and disturbance. About robot control algorithm, we have studied shape-based control for precision work and feature-based control for rapid movement, development of robust control using sliding mode control method. Our current activities focus on autonomous mobile robot, wake-homing torpedo and robots for the automated building construction system for high-rise steel structure buildings.

  • Robotics Laboratory
  • Power Engineering Laboratory image The main research interest of the robotics laboratory is a 3-dimensional mapping of the environment using mobile robots, which is a new hot trend in robotic fields. To build a 3D map for an unknown environment, we do research into the following topics:

    1) System modeling: We use mathematical equations to model, not only the robot, but also its related sensors. We have developed various mathematical representations that model the real system as closely as possible.
    2) Noise filtering: Various errors come in from the system and we have developed novel techniques that enhance previous noise filtering techniques.
    3) 3D Environment modeling: The 3D environment is represented by points, lines, and planes. We propose new representations that upgrade the quality of the map.
    4) Sensor Fusion: We use several sources of sensor information for the mapping and we have special techniques that fuse various inputs in an optimal way.

    For those researches, we use of various mathematics such as linear algebra, probability, filtering theories, etc. Also, we use of several algorithms for pattern recognition. We mainly use Matlab and C++ for the robot experiments.

    To enable a fully autonomous 3D mapping, which is our final goal, we will continue to push the frontier to attain world-class research results.
