Introduction
Recently, at the dawn of the new era, technology related to signal processing and multimedia is continuously evolving around us and influencing every aspect of our lives. In order to achieve a worldwide competence technological leadership role, we have been actively searching and studying a wide range of upcoming techniques related to these fields. Specifically, we have successfully completed several projects with the support of local & worldwide global industry and government, and contributed to technological innovations and leading consumer services in today’s multimedia revolution. With the help of outstanding testing facilities and laboratories, we are currently pursuing significant advances in the fields of multimedia communication, multimedia information analysis, multimedia codecs, video search, acoustic signal processing, speech processing and understanding, robot vision and tracking, wide dynamic range image processing, multimodal technologies and computer graphics
In the field of Signal Processing and Multimedia, there are 5 full-time professors, 37 Ph.D. students, 20 MS students and 1 Post-doctor fellow.

  • Center for Multimedia Communication & Processing
  • Center for Multimedia Communication & Processing image The Center for Multimedia Communication and Processing (CMCP) is focusing its research on processing, compression, and transmission of multimedia for the next generation. CMCP is composed of 4 labs, each specializing in various fields related to multimedia. For the last decade, CMCP has successfully completed more than 50 research projects with the support of several major companies and government. We have worked on real-time video compression and fast DSP implementation for H.264, MPEG-4, and scalable video coding (SVC). Moreover, we have developed several visual signal processing algorithms and transferred these techniques to Samsung Co. and LG Co. Also, we conduct research on image enhancement for LCD and PDP displays.

  • Intelligent Signal Processing Laboratory
  • Intelligent Signal Processing Laboratory image Research at the ISPL Laboratory is centered on developing fundamental intelligent algorithms through advanced modeling, exploiting novel signal processing theory, and exploring intelligent information processing techniques, all in an effort to realize the demands of advanced information-technology. ISPL draws upon a wide range of research experiences as indicated by the active journal publications in areas such as image and speech signal processing, data fusion, and pattern recognition for intelligent and multimodal systems.

    Its present vision is focused on developing advanced algorithms capable of human interactions with intelligent computers achieved by the integration of a multiplicity of interface technologies including speech, images and motion tracking.

  • Digital Media Laboratory
  • The main focus of our laboratory research is on the recently challenging issues in the field of the digital multimedia processing. Our research activities span a broad range of multimedia processing and related topics including Digital Broadcasting (ATSC, DVB), Multimedia Description Standards (MPEG-7/21, TV-Anytime), Video Codec (MPEG-1/2/4, H.264), Digital Home Networking, Video Indexing & Retrieval, and Pattern Recognition. Our remarkable applications which have been developed so far can be mentioned as: search engine for image and video, browsing and indexing in MPEG-2/4, face detection/tracking, and object recognition in 3-D images. Currently, we are focusing our research on various applications related to DTV broadcasting.

  • Media Communications Laboratory
  • Media Communications Laboratory (MCL) was founded in September 2005 and has been advised by Prof. Chang-Su Kim. The research activities of MCL lie in the signal and image processing, media communications, display technology and computer graphics. We have developed various video decoding algorithms, compression algorithms for three dimensional (3D) dynamic objects, and effective image processing algorithms for plasma display panels (PDP). Currently we are focusing on research related to error-resilient image and video coding, multiview video communication systems, representation and compression of 3D models, and image processing for display systems.

  • Image & Communication Quality Laboratory
  • The research fields of the ICQ (Image and Communication Quality) Lab are in the areas of image/video processing and communication.

    Our research topics are roughly divided into two parts. For the part of image processing and quality, we focus on the quality enhancement of image/video contents, such as image super-resolution for UHD TVs, quality assessment of stereo-scopic images, and high-quality and low-power OLED display.

    For the other part of image transmission quality, focus is placed on the compression and transmission of video contents. Recently, we have developed mobile VNC (virtual network computing) systems for M2M (Machine to Machine) multimedia environments. In addition, we are currently doing research on computer vision such as age/gender, and gaze estimation.
